Legacy WM developed the Lozells and East Handsworth heritage trail in 2016. Using a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), they trained local volunteers to conduct regular guided tours of this area of Birmingham, UK.
The area often gets a negative press and most people are not aware of the significant role it has played in making Britain 'great'. The likes of Matthew Boulton, James Watts and William Murdoch who are seen as the forefathers of the industrial revolution worked and lived in Handsworth. We have some historical buildings in the areas that range from St Mary’s Convent which is designed by Pugin, Birmingham Asian Resource Centre building was the ‘Toll House’ that collected taxes on route to ‘Aston Manor’, James Watt Gatehouse, Soho House, Handsworth Park and many others. We also have St Mary’s Church which has the remains of James Watt, Matthew Boulton, William Murdoch and many other great people. There are a number of other, very significant buildings and places in the area.
They supported the heritage trail with a website containing interviews about each stop on the trail. These were linked to QR codes that were placed in each location, to create an augmented trail.
