In the 19th century, Portugal was rulled by a Monarchy. Democracy as was not in place, yet. Although, the Cooperativa Operária Portalegrense was one of the first organisations in the region to use democratic procedures to select the governing bodies of an organisation. For this reason, this artefact has a pivotal symoblism for this organisation and for the local and regional history.
