Introduction

This quest captures the learning for the first two quests and asks leaners to work together to create a game format that can practically demonstrate the risks and rewards around copyright and vehicles such as Creative Commons. The game format suggested is the popular family Snakes and Ladders game where players seek to move from a start to a finish using throws of two dice to move up the board. Typically, there are six snakes and six ladders on the board with snakes sending back the player that lands on it and ladders pushing up the player closer to the finish point. The idea is that on landing on a snake one of six negative statements that learners prepare on breaching Copyright are read out and on landing on a ladder one of six posive attributes of copy write are read out.
What’s the activity?

Using the simple board game “Snakes and ladders (downloading a free template or just using a board that you may have already):
- Write six two-line statements where infringement of copyright occurs and of the potential adverse consequences
- Write a further six two-line statements where use of copyright, creative commons licence or other and the positive benefits associated with this.
Learners can undertake desktop research to help shape these statements.
The first statements should be read out by the player who lands on the ‘snake’ (where there is a negative impact in breaching copyright). The second statements should be read out by players who land on a ‘ladder’ setting out the positive benefits.
What am I going to do?
The quest works well in small groups and the tasks can be summarised.
- Undertake desktop research copyright, on Creative Commons and r on wider tools for safely publishing accessing information. Search inquiry could start with “What are the negative impacts of breaching copyright? What are the positive benefits of using Creative Commons licences? This will quickly reveal a range of scholarly articles, videos, blogs.
- Write up 12 statements from these sources – 6 positive and 6 benefit and print on small cards and to be used when playing the game.
Learners will need access to a computer with internet access. Working collectively in a library setting could be useful as computer access and hard copy of relevant books and articles will be readily accessible.
What will I learn?
- How to develop creative solutions / games that illustrate knowledge on a complex topic
- How to access information including published material, films, images and music and publish safely without infringing copyright material.
- How to undertake online desktop research.
- How to work as a team to research a topic and communicate the findings to an audience
- How to summarise clearly and concisely findings on complex topics with legal implications.
- To be able to perform in a team setting delivering a specific goal and task
- To be able to better communicate orally and written
